'Batafurai' (butterfly) Katana
Our 'Batafurai' (butterfly) Katana features our beautiful 'Classic' Bo-Hi blade, in a time tested Shinogi-Zukuri profile. The butterfly (hand guard) is beautifully accented with golden gilding. The cast brass fuchi and Kashira (handle fittings) feature maple leaf designs.
The tsuka' (handle) itself is wooden with genuine premium blackend rayskin, complete with high gloss golden alloy dragon menuki' (handle ornaments). Professionally bound in radiant purple tsuka-ito' (handle braid), in the traditional Hineri-Maki style. This gives the wielder a very positive and sturdy grip, which is what you need when handling steel as sharp as ours. The saya' (sheath) is done in high gloss black lacquer, with stunning shell inlay, including paua arranged in a cherry blossom tree design.
The blade is handmade from quality carbon steel. It is polished to perfection in traditional Japanese style creating a streamline profile right to the edge. With no secondary bevel, like some cheaper nontraditional samurai swords may have. Our katana are extremely sharp! The blade also features a beautiful Bo-hi (blood groove) which produces audible feedback when swung properly. The tempering has been done by skilled artisans which is the most important part of the blade manufacturing process, providing the most desirable balance between toughness and flexibility. The overall katana is a fully functional sword.
