Description

Ryujin means "heavenly dragon" in Japanese. The symbolism of this legendary creature and the great sky above are themes found throughout Japanese culture and folklore. As presented here in this exquisite sword from Ryu Shinken, these themes are often intertwined.

So too are two of the Japanese sword's most discerning features: the folding and clay hardening of the katana. Our Ryujin Katana showcases both of these traditional techniques, executed in a stunning display of art and function.

Starting with the clay hardening, this process is done to reinforce the sword's edge, allowing it to perform optimally under the stress of cutting while maintaining its form and sharpness. Clay hardening, also known as differential hardening, leaves the spine or body of the blade slightly softer, allowing it to flex upon impact. Where these two zones meet, the hamon is formed. This naturally occurring wavy line is a visible display of the change in the steel's crystalline structure. The hamon is something that Japanese sword enthusiasts revere as a fundamental aspect of Japanese sword design.

The folding of the blade, practiced in ancient Japan, served to homogenize and eliminate impurities from the steel. In today’s context, with modern steel, smiths no longer need to concern themselves with this. However, folded blades are still the most sought after among Japanese sword crafts, and not just for the sake of tradition. The intrinsic beauty of the unique steel grain known as "hada", remains highly desirable. Final polishing reveals this pattern, showcasing the blade’s structural intricacies and its “soul.”

The Ryujin Katana: a masterfully crafted sword that combines tradition, precision, and legend. Forged with a folded, clay-hardened blade in the time-honored "Shingi-zukuri" profile, it boasts clean lines, geometric perfection, and superb balance. Hand-honed, it effortlessly slices through paper and tatami alike. Featuring premium fittings, solid brass accents, and a genuine stingray leather-wrapped handle, this katana exemplifies both beauty and durability. With over 20 years of expertise, Superior Swords & Ryu Shinken proudly presents a masterpiece that rivals the finest swords of ancient Japan — all at an accessible price point.
