Vikings believed in many different gods. This hammer is a symbol of the great god Thor. Thor was the god of thunder and lightning and was also ruler of the sky in Norse mythology. He was the eldest and most powerful son of Odin, the king of gods and goddesses.
Thors chief weapon was a hammer called Mjollnir, which he threw at his enemies. Mjollnir never missed its mark and always returned to Thor after hitting its target.
